Maassen won two of the biggest comedy contests in the Netherlands in 1990, the Groninger Studenten Cabaret Festival(GSCF), and Cameretten. The GSCF jury was not pleased with the quality of the contestants that year, and gave Maassen the first prize, remarking he was the best of the year, but still not very good. In the following years, however, Maassen fame grew steadily, especially amongst students. Maassens style was based on stand-up comedy: Alone on stage, telling jokes and stories to amuse the public, without any musical support (a thing common for most Dutch comedians up to that point).

In July 2006, Kelly Chen and Jordan Chan held a joint concert at the La Kwok Concert Hall. During the grand finale of the seventh show, they performed a mini musical, where Kelly portrayed a high-profile celebrity and Jordan played an ordinary person. On September 14, 2011, The Horrible Crowes took the stage of the legendary Troubadour in West Hollywood, CA for an amazing hour-long plus set. It was only the band's second show, and attendees were able to experience Elsie in an authentic, natural setting. "I think this was one of the highlights of my career," Brian Fallon recalls. "Everyone was in great spirits, we were comfortable, and we were playing music that excited us beyond what we thought we were capable of. I remember, on this night, I felt like someone else was playing for us. I love this band, as a fan."
