British climber – now resident of Tasmania – Paul Pritchard, was one of the leading climbers and mountaineers of the 1980s and 1990s, renowned for his hard and extremely bold first ascents. In 1998 Paul was abseiling in to climb the Totem Pole in Tasmania when he dislodged a rock with his rope that hit him on the head, leaving him with a severe head injury that he was lucky to survive. The aftermath of the accident left him with hemiplegia, which means he has little feeling or movement in the right side of this body. Despite this disability, Paul’s continued to live a life filled with adventure. Eighteen years later Paul returns to the Totem Pole to find out if he has recovered enough to finish the climb.

Jackson Pollock 51(en)

The photography of German photographer Hans Namuth is largely credited for Pollock’s rise to fame, and as the painter gained a higher profile, along with Abstract Expressionism in general, Namuth returned to capture Pollock’s “action painting” on video for the short documentary below. In a cinematically brilliant move, Namuth asked Pollock to create a painting on glass, so that he could film underneath, giving the viewer the experience of actually being the canvas. Lacking a lighting crew, they shot in the cold Long Island expanse of grassland outside of Pollock’s home.

José Clemente Orozco, pintor del hombre(es)

A document that summarizes images of the energetic Mexican muralist's most significant works, using rhythmic montages that reflect the prevailing mood of each of his pictorial periods and a complex soundtrack composed of effects and various orchestral and choral interventions. Devoid of narration and didactic rigidity, this short film focuses its resources on the pure enjoyment of Orozco's work.

The Seafarers(en)

Stanley Kubrick’s first color film, commissioned by the Seafarers International Union to promote the benefits of union membership. Shot inside the union’s Atlantic and Gulf Coast District facilities, it features scenes of ships, machinery, cafeteria life, and meetings, highlighting the daily routines and camaraderie of seafarers. Thought lost for decades, the film was rediscovered in 1973 and preserved by the Library of Congress.

Isle of Flowers(pt)

As with so many early films by Sokurov, this film has two dates: the first is the date of its creation (the film was then banned), the second is the date of the final edition and legal public screening. The film consists of German and Soviet archive footage of the World War II — to be exact, from the end of the war. An attempt to make a large–scale documentary on this subject had been undertaken in the Soviet cinema of the 1960s: the film — “Ordinary Fascism” — by the outstanding Soviet film–maker Mikhail Romm had become a classic retrospective investigation of fascism. But Sokurov uses the expressive power of the documentary image in an absolutely different way. He does not amass materials for a large–scale picture of Nazi crimes.

Prairie Flowers(es)

After Silvia’s femicide, Yecenia, her cousin, and one of the ñomndaa weavers from the Prairie of Flowers, create a ritual and poetic mourning alongside other weaving women. The ñomndaa women share ancient wisdom about their profession as weavers, rooted in breathtaking myths and the foremothers’ real life experiences. The elders decide that the only way to proceed is to look forward to the future, taking care of the young children left behind after their mother’s murder. Yecenia speaks through the radio, urging her local community to adopt new words, such as femicide, into their local tongue. Through this ritual, threads, dreams, and their craft are collectively woven together as an act of healing and resilience. In Prairie of Flowers, the act of weaving opens up to become an act of resistance in its own right.
