The first film of the trilogy “discommunication” introduces the viewer to the narrative methods and film language on which the following films will be based. In a short essayistic form, images appear that are redefined when they come into contact with the text. The impossibility to speak, to agree, to understand oneself or someone else generates reactions for which the existing language is insufficient to describe. In trying to express this “intralinguistic transgression” on the screen, one must inevitably resort to abstraction. The transition from the object world to the non-object world seems to me to be one of the few ways to come closer to conveying these states.

Language barriers, religious differences, living in barracks for 14 years, and unemployment were all obstacles to overcome in order to be accepted and then achieve mutual enrichment. Enriched with archive footage to explain the historical context of the time, the film seeks above all to express feelings and unspoken words.

I've Been Trying to Tell You(en)

Do you look back on the optimism of the 1997-2001 era as a lost golden age, or do you see it as a period of naïvety, delusion and folly? There’s a lot of nostalgia for the nineties at the moment, especially from people too young to remember it who see the decade as a simpler, pre-internet time. Modern nostalgia often draws on corporate American-90s mall culture, but what about British culture? With I’ve Been Trying To Tell You – made to accompany the Saint Etienne album of the same name – director Alasdair McLellan evokes the era through the fog of memory. The resulting film, shot in locations from Grangemouth to Portmeirion to Southampton, is both beautiful and enveloping.

On weekends or holidays, the Zhongli train station in Taiwan is always filled with migrant workers who moved to seek out better economic or living conditions. In 1949, millions of Chinese soldiers and civilians migrated to Taiwan; they are regarded as ‘displaced persons’. Yuan’s father was one of these immigrants, a refugee of the civil war, a stranger away from home. For The Strangers, Yuan uses a high-speed camera and a high-lumen spotlight to shoot from the moving passenger car through the window. As the camera captures the face of each person standing on the platform, these strangers transform into sculptures, frozen in time.
