The charming commitment-phobe has actually come to southern Germany from Berlin to escape his unresolved relationship issues. Instead, however, he once again brings a lot of turmoil to the fragile emotional lives of two women: Barbara, who works as a kitchen assistant in the same nursing home, has chosen Holger as a remedy for her loneliness. However, the tender love story is immediately thrown into turmoil when Holger soon finds himself attracted to his boss, Petra Opels.

Gisela spontaneously goes to a party that they invite her to that evening, where she and Paul begin a sexual relationship.

They steel cloths for her. There is a little kissing with both but nothing that could make the other jealous. During most of the movie they enjoy minor pleasures. But occasionally when the girl is alone she has attacks of very painful emotions. In the end it turns out that she is a former child-prisoner of a German KZ-lager, who had run away from a mental hospital in bikini and coat. Some of the staff were searching for her. But when she sees them she commits suicide.

At this point, tensions rise between the three, particularly between Thacker, who is white, and Burton, who is black.

When the lieutenant is injured and taken to hospital, the two lovers, against all odds, dare the only possible way out: he defects, she leaves her husband, and they begin a journey without return towards the border.
