The Weakest Link (en)

The Weakest Link was an Australian game show based on the successful UK format, which aired from February 2001 until April 2002 and was broadcast on the Seven Network. Presented by Cornelia Frances, the show featured nine contestants competing for a potential prize of $100,000. Airing twice weekly in primetime, on Mondays and Fridays, later Thursdays, it received modest ratings until its cancellation. The Monday edition indirectly competed against the more-popular Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and the Friday edition served as a lead-in to the AFL telecasts in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia only. Later on in the year, The Weakest Link was moved to Thursdays at 7:30pm. In 2002, the show aired only once a week, on Mondays. Due to poor ratings, the show was cancelled for good with one of the final episodes being a lifestyle special that aired on 8 April 2002. The show was produced in the Seven Network's South Melbourne headquarters.

The segments were originally recorded with consumer grade digital video cameras and edited on personal computers. Two transfer students, Atsuko Maeda and Onizuka Daruma came at the all-girls school Majisuka Gakuen. In this school violence and fighting are common among the Yankee students. Noisy and trouble maker Daruma made a fuss as soon as she entered the school, win in her first fight but then was beaten easily by another gang shortly after. In contrary to Daruma's bold-but-powerless attitude, Maeda who is truthfully a strong girl despite of her silent nature found Daruma is beaten by Team Hormon before her. The word "Majisuka?" (means are you serious?) instantly awaken her true nature and made her won the battle against Daruma's attackers easily, thus made a big fuss at the school and the news even reached the strongest fighting group, Rappapa. Afterwards, Daruma acknowledged Maeda as her boss and as a result the friendship between the two girls began to grow along with their fights with fellow students at their school.

Seven episodes were broadcast immediately after the highly-rated series Cheers but didn't pick enough audiences. The short-lived series was cancelled because of low turnout. The series was inspired by the 1986 film by Garry Marshall starring Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleason also entitled Nothing in Common in which Hanks played David Basner and Gleason protrayed Max Basner. Todd Waring later reprised another Tom Hanks role in a TV sequel to Splash for The Wonderful World of Disney called Splash, Too.
