Álvaro bandages her wound with a handkerchief on which his initials are inscribed and Lina gratefully gives her her jewelry and in turn informs Álvaro of her decision not to continue with this adventure. The beggar woman is assaulted and murdered. Her corpse is found with Alvaro's handkerchief, who is accused of the crime. Although he is innocent, he keeps silent to protect Lina.
