The documentary Generation ’89 portrays the so-called Generation of the Great Change. They are the members of the first generation who lived their own adulthood in the Third Republic. Young people, currently in their thirties, most of them were sitting at school in 1989. They were born in around 1968. The system change reached them during their university studies, which allowed them to decide about their own future freely and independently. The documentary allows an inspection into the individuals of the Generation ’89, who were mature adults when entering the Third Republic. Generation ’89 shows their heroes’ success and failures, worries and fears, as well as, presents the past two decades of the Polish freedom.

Four girls, left unattended, enjoy freedom, imitate the life of adults, plunge into reckless adventures and get into trouble. Based on true events, nine-year-old Paula’s story of growing up is set against the background of time when Latvia made her first steps towards independence.

As if immersed in the situation, the viewer witnesses a distressing encounter between angry parents, a helpless teacher and three schoolgirls. It soon becomes clear that certain things are going wrong in their class. There have been complaints of bullying. The parents are mainly concerned with defending their own children. They throw around neurotic accusations and make untenable demands. Using a camera which itself seems to participate in the discussion, scene after scene is dissected with refreshing malice and a sense for the dark side of human nature. Desperate attempts to resolve things unleash an avalanche of other problems. It takes a long time before Denise, Bella and Mina can have their say.

In the text, Katrina Daschner is interested in the ambiguity of fiction and reality, and the tension of unrealized sexual desires. In Pferdebusen the filmmaker masterfully succeeds in staging the ruptures and irritations that are so essential for showing and wanting, with subtle humour and grandiose human and non-human actors.
