The Name of the Rose(en)

14th-century Franciscan monk William of Baskerville and his young novice arrive at a conference to find that several monks have been murdered under mysterious circumstances. To solve the crimes, William must rise up against the Church's authority and fight the shadowy conspiracy of monastery monks using only his intelligence – which is considerable.

Computer Music(fi)

The film stars two computers: Elliott 803 (in the Department of Nuclear Physics, the University of Helsinki) and IBM 1130 (in the computer centre at the University of Turku). At times, the coexistence of man and machine provokes suffocating frustration. This is only the starting point for something more subtle: the art created with computers.

The Punched Tape of Life(fi)

Shot at the Department of Nuclear Physics at the University of Helsinki, the images of The Punched Tape of Life illustrate the beauty of 1960s information technology. These decorative scenes parallel a set of ”summer interludes” which document Kurenniemi’s entourage.

Carnaby Street(fi)

#29(en)

#29 belongs to a series of video works and researches the relationship between landscape representation, perception, and the unconscious. The techniques applied to the footage are a mix of hacking of the MPEG information and faulty encoding settings. Crucial data is removed, forcing software to re-interpret the visual information.

Darwin's Darlings(lv)

Standing near the reptile section in a zoo for 26 minutes we can learn a lot about the animals on both sides of the separating glass.

Interface(en)

An Interface not only between two continually switched over images but also between documentary tape, imagery taken from "reality", and its transformation in the electronic sphere.

Tissues(en)

In Studies cycle, abstract studies are assembled, which document the Vasulka's early work with electronic material. The visual aspect of Tissues is the work of Steina, whereas Woody engineered the sound.

Discs(en)

In Discs, originally made as installation for a set of monitors, the creators experiment with the phenomenon of horizontal drift trhough the indtroduction of purposeful time error. The result is the repetitive abstract pattern of a distorted magnetic field. Furthermore, this horizontal stream also travels thorugh a set of TV screens stacked on top of each other, giving the work a vertical dimension as well. The image thus demonstrates the flexibility of the frame in video.

It Will Avenge(pt)

A person is in a deep sleep at home. But the night won't continue so calm for much longer.

Running Film(en)

A London park and artist Chris Welsby runs repeatedly into frame and off into the distance; his actions contrast with the more leisurely activities of others passing by. The camera remained stationary at shooting and a hand-clap to synchronise sound at the start of each take is not edited out. The piece has the appearance of a film loop but it becomes clear that it is a series of different takes.

Ladyhawke(en)

Captain Etienne Navarre is a man on whose shoulders lies a cruel curse. Punished for loving each other, Navarre must become a wolf by night whilst his lover, Lady Isabeau, takes the form of a hawk by day. Together, with the thief Philippe Gaston, they must try to overthrow the corrupt Bishop and in doing so break the spell.
