Overview
On the occasion of her birthday, a young woman sends out invitations to her many admirers: she wants to marry the one of them who gives her the best present. While the numerous suitors appear, Ernst Lubitsch's character is almost too late: having lost a button on his shirt, he has to roller-skate to his beloved in order to arrive on time. The effort is worth it, as he gives her the best present of all: a quarter of a pound of butter. Lost.

They proceed to the mining town of Goldbrook, where the heiress is to occupy a mysterious mansion on the occupancy of which hinges a great fortune. The engineer of the mines is deeply interested in thwarting the plans of Lady Chatfield, and with his gang of roughneck miners makes things lively for the pugilist star in a series of fights that are hair raisers.

The Kid is taken into the household, trusted and loved by the gladdened mother. For the first time he has a home. The romance develops. And when the time comes to rob and flee he has too much manhood to break the loving mother's heart. The surprise comes when it is revealed that the man the Kid killed in Texas was the real son.
