Then, she discovers that she is pregnant. Her first pregnancy at the age of forty takes her by surprise, and she worries about the impact of radiation on her unborn child.

The Prairies are singled out because of their proximity to huge stockpiles of intercontinental ballistic missiles located in North Dakota.
