An Interface not only between two continually switched over images but also between documentary tape, imagery taken from "reality", and its transformation in the electronic sphere.

Tissues(en)

In Studies cycle, abstract studies are assembled, which document the Vasulka's early work with electronic material. The visual aspect of Tissues is the work of Steina, whereas Woody engineered the sound.

Discs(en)

In Discs, originally made as installation for a set of monitors, the creators experiment with the phenomenon of horizontal drift trhough the indtroduction of purposeful time error. The result is the repetitive abstract pattern of a distorted magnetic field. Furthermore, this horizontal stream also travels thorugh a set of TV screens stacked on top of each other, giving the work a vertical dimension as well. The image thus demonstrates the flexibility of the frame in video.

It Will Avenge(pt)

A person is in a deep sleep at home. But the night won't continue so calm for much longer.

Golden Voyage(en)

The work is inspired by the surrealist René Magritte's unsettling painting La Legende doree, depicting French baguettes flitting in a window frame. Woody and Steina used a three-camera construction and through the use of horizontal deflection created objects migrating through a landscape. Maureen Turim called this work "a meta-discourse on painting and video".

Inaudible footsteps(ja)

Footsteps of horses and sheep. I run to the forest in a hurry. But I never reach to the forest of my destination. I'm remain in the original place, the place before the tale. After the destination (forest) disappears gradually, aimless footsteps are left on the stage. "Being on the way to somewhere" becomes a story of film in itself. The white light placed in the center of picture is continuously changing its role and prolongs the tail of the tale.

The knot of meridian(ja)

One day, one moment, there the forest has its own time. The place without meridian. The empty place. The place without human. The place has been thought as "forest" in our memory. This suspense film of forest was shot in the small forest which gets even smaller and forgotten in urban life in Japan. The graphical details, the dark, humid shadows of forest and the digital sound are overlapped.

#29 belongs to a series of video works and researches the relationship between landscape representation, perception, and the unconscious. The techniques applied to the footage are a mix of hacking of the MPEG information and faulty encoding settings. Crucial data is removed, forcing software to re-interpret the visual information.

Computer Music(fi)

The film stars two computers: Elliott 803 (in the Department of Nuclear Physics, the University of Helsinki) and IBM 1130 (in the computer centre at the University of Turku). At times, the coexistence of man and machine provokes suffocating frustration. This is only the starting point for something more subtle: the art created with computers.
