The show was a spin-off from a one-off 90-minute TV film "There's a Hole in Your Dustbin, Delilah" written by Jack Rosenthal and directed by Michael Apted. As the series' popularity grew, the story was expanded to span two generations of characters; the children of the first part are grown up in the second part, which began on 7 April 2010 and the theme song was changed to dialect version.
