By the rules of the research institute, Folke has to sit on an umpire's chair in Isak's kitchen and observe him from there, but never talk to him. Isak stops using his kitchen and observes Folke through a hole in the ceiling instead. However, the two lonely men slowly overcome the initial post-war Norwegian-Swede distrust and become friends.

Heidi leaves her beloved Alm and moves to Frankfurt, where she finds a new good friend in Clara. However, this idea is not met with enthusiasm by Heidi and her grandfather, Peter and his grandmother are also very reluctant to let Heidi go. After much persuasion and many promises from Aunt Dete, Heidi finally leaves her beloved mountain world with a heavy heart and travels to Frankfurt.
