Oskar Matzerath is a very unusual boy. Miraculously, he gets his wish. As the Nazis rise to power in Danzig, Oskar wills himself to remain a child, beating his tin drum incessantly and screaming in protest at the chaos surrounding him.

Using Pete as an excuse Danny screams to her mother: 'Let Me Walk My Life', and by doing so, she manages to shift her own perception just enough, to be able to perceive some color to her life.

Kings' fools, minstrels, beggars, old aristocrats and children make up its universe, along with the clowns, who alone are able to resist the passing of time and the social transformations that accompany it.
