Ruby, whose real name is Rubidin and Ghaus are a couple in love. Because of her love for Ghaus, Rubidin is willing to sacrifice to change his identity to Ruby. Not a bit of the sacrifices made by Ruby, changed his identity through a sex change. But Ruby calculation is wrong because Ghaus could not accept the physical condition of a woman and so breaks up with Ruby. Unexpectedly, the male hormone in Ruby returns and he is returned to Rubidin. Then Rubidin falls in love with a girl who is gracious and they plan to marry. This story, which for LaBruce “serves as a kind of allegory for all gender radicals and outcasts driven to extremes by the disapproval and hostility of the dominant order,” is rendered in a visual style that nods to the era of Schoenberg’s melodrama. LaBruce cheekily appropriates the formal vocabulary of silent cinema with black-and-white photography, irises, and intertitles like “A cock, a cock, my kingdom for a cock!”
