A young society man invites an old derelict to his apartments and gives him a big dinner, he tells the old fellow he should steal rather than go hungry, and fills his mind full of false sociology. The old fellow, acting on the advice, tries to steal from his benefactor. There is a desperate struggle, at the close of which the police come, and the derelict is allowed to go.

Years later Kirby, now a judge and a stern proponent of capital punishment, unknowingly sentences his innocent son to death in the electric chair on the basis of circumstantial evidence. As the youth is about to be executed, his identity is revealed and the horrified Kirby relents. The judge's plea for mercy is ignored, however, and his son electrocuted. Stevens is blamed by his fiancée, who terminates their engagement. The artist becomes a derelict and is wrongfully imprisoned. Eventually Stevens is exonerated and reunited with Marion.
