A woman carries a cat in a shopping bag that refuses to be petted. Tired of its behaviour, she violently strikes the bag repeatedly against a wall. Then, with the blood of the animal, she draws a heart pierced by an arrow.

Emergencies(fr)

An ambulance heads towards the "crossroads of the crow's feet" in response to an accident. Unable to find the place, the driver stops at an intersection to ask for directions from a dull-eared local.

A couple are watching television together. Over time, the shows become more bizarre: a news report about the arrest of two terrorists reveals they have the same faces as the two spectators; in another, a female strips for the man and finally a politician demonises the couple and declares them enemies of the people. The Quietest Hour(nl)

Thomas, 70, looks back on the last evening he and his lost friend Mari spent together. An evening in which they drink wine, dine, listen to piano playing and dance with their girlfriends. As the hours pass before his eyes, Thomas contemplates the lost friendship, the person Mari was and the conversations of that night.

Mamori transports us into a black-and-white universe of fluid shapes, dappled and striated with shadows and light, where the texture of the visuals and of the celluloid itself have been transformed through the filmmaker’s artistry. The raw material of images and sounds was captured in the Amazon rainforest by filmmaker Karl Lemieux and avant-garde composer Francisco López, a specialist in field recordings. Re-filming the photographs on 16 mm stock, then developing the film stock itself and digitally editing the whole, Lemieux transmutes the raw images and accompanying sounds into an intense sensory experience at the outer limits of representation and abstraction. Fragmented musical phrases filter through the soundtrack, evoking in our imagination the clamour of the tropical rainforest in this remote Amazonian location called Mamori.
