Overview:
January 1945. The first French regiment of paratroopers to fight with an American unit prepares to liberate Alsace in France. An Allied Division must take the forest bordering the town of Jebsheim in advance of the attack later dubbed the 'French Stalingrad.' Prisoners of the cold, snow, and harsh winter conditions, and pounded by German forces, the French and American soldiers learn the violence and hell of war as they struggle for freedom and survival.

Then Reese leads two of the men in an unauthorized and unsuccessful attack on the pillbox, in which the other two are killed; and when the main platoon returns, he is threatened with court-martial. Rather that face the disgrace, and in an attempt to show he was right, he makes a one-man attack on the pillbox.
