Travelling Hawkers in Frankfurt am Main(de)

A documentary about unemployed people who bought fruit and vegetables at moderate prices at the wholesale market and sold these in the streets of Frankfurt. Since they had no permits they were constantly with their bulky carts on the run from the police. One part of the film was shot at the fairgrounds in front of the wholesale market. Newspaper and lottery ticket vendors, propagandists offering their ware for a few pfennigs, all convey the mood of a time when need made people inventive.

Dev does get employment at Charlie's Disco, where he meets with Maya and falls in love with her. When Charlie's Disco's competitor, Rana, finds out about Dev, he wants to hire Dev, but Dev decides to continue to work with Charlie's Disco, as a result Dev and Charlie get a beating by Rana's men, and Dev is unable to sing. After recuperating, Dev is devastated to find out that Maya and Shiv Kumar are in love with each other. What impact will this have on Dev and his brother on one hand, and what of his career in music?

In this film titled “From Candy to Cocaine” from 1986, the “Teens Kick-Off” performance group, a performance group recovering from alcohol and drug abuse, perform a modern theater piece on their personal stories of addiction and recoveries. The film also portrays adolescents, who share their stories from use and abuse to recovery. Real people, not actors, speak frankly about their addiction in a theater setting. Parents share their feelings, illustrating the family’s struggles. The film ends on a positive note, emphasizing recovery. It is produced in cooperation with the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the Department of Health and Human Services, directed by Terry Losardo, photographed by Charles Shedd, and edited by David Sherwin.

One of the social guidance / scare films made by prolific filmmaker Sid Davis, “Book Him!” was produced in the 1960s. It shows various youth / delinquents and the crimes they commit, and centers on the story of a white, teenage boy who is arrested.

Stoner's Night Out(en)

Presented by Voices in Society and Travelers Insurance Indemnity, this untitled PSA-style film from the 1970s is a compilation of various anti-drug use PSAs from National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Information (NCADI). The films were assembled by a film collector who did public screenings of cult films; he often showed this compilation under the moniker “Stoner’s Night Out”. NCADI is the information service for the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. The PSAs that comprise this film combine footage of drug use as well as interviews. Overall, this film warns of the short-term and long-term effects of drug use with the later segments of the film focusing on marijuana use specifically.
