Baptiste, a half-breed employed by the Bates family, is discharged for stealing and burns the camp, driving the family to refuge with Margot. Elsie, hoping to regain Divvy's affections, dresses in boyish clothes similar to Margot's. Joining forces with Baptiste, they capture Margot, and Baptiste takes her in a canoe downstream. Kirk drifts to the South Seas, eventually landing in Manila, where he becomes a derelict. When Lillie, a fellow drifter, is roughly handled in a bar, Kirk goes to her assistance; she expresses appreciation for his bravery and soon effects his regeneration through her faith in him. Kirk and Lillie journey to the interior, and they obtain work on a plantation recently purchased by Randolph Sherman. During a native uprising, Sherman is killed, and Kirk saves Marjorie from certain death.

Later, when she is safely returned to her parents and her fiancé, Roy, they see a man hurt in the park. It proves to be John. Marie recognizes him and takes him home. He becomes a servant in the family. They are giving a reception. John is serving the guests. He finds a note pushed into his hand as he stands before the curtained window. It says that unless he hands over a gem, which is displayed among the wedding presents, the crooks will get him. He tries to steal the jewel, but Marie prevents it. She then causes the arrest of the crooks who are waiting to receive the jewel.
