Superbike Episode IV - Attack of the Clowns(en)

Not too long ago... at a race circuit just around the corner... ... And so we come to the greatest DVD of our time. It's called "Bagpuss: The Director's cut" and has nothing at all to do with the DVD we're giving away here. No, this is a far shoddier affair featuring, as it does, a documentary, or - if you will - a mockumentary. Revealing how the staff of Superbike manages to cobble together the best sports bike magazine in the world every month. It's all here - the road tests, the track action, the long-termer bike tests, the centerfold shoots, big Al's baking tips, well, maybe not those but we'll talk about everything else. Citizen Kane? Battleship Potemkin? Dude, where's my car? They are all unquestionably far, better, films than this - but do they feature some of the finest motorcycles ever built? No, they do not. This DVD will fill in the gaps so disappointingly evident in the works of Messers Wells, Einstein, and Leiner.

A documentary about the people who ride their motorcycles around America. Filmed during the 1996 annual biker run held at Sturgis, South Dakota, it takes a close look at some of the different types of people who ride motorbikes, showing that they're not what popular stereotypes have portrayed them to be. Among the people followed are Alex and Martin, a middle-aged couple planning to attend the festival together, Ilene, who comes from a long line of bikers, and the rough-looking "Liddo" Jim, head of a group called the Ressurection Motorcycle Club.

The stars include Richard Petty, David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Bobby Allison, and Buddy Baker, and includes upstart female racer Janet Guthrie. The sport in the mid-1970s was undergoing a surge of national popularity after Petty and Pearson crashed fighting for the win within sight of the checkered flag of the 1976 Daytona 500, telecast live on ABC Sports, and the surging interest triggered renewed media interest in the sport.

The idea for the film was proposed to the monks in 1984, but the Carthusians said they wanted time to think about it. The Carthusians finally contacted Gröning 16 years later to say they were now willing to permit Gröning to shoot the movie, if he was still interested.

We follow the Newman-Haas (Andretti) racing team through the process of building, testing, and racing for a season. This includes extensive race speed on-track footage, including some pre-race footage with a full squad of cars. From time to time, we check in with a small shop building/restoring one of the first roadsters Mario Andretti raced; the finale includes him taking it for a spin.
