In 1871, a Chicago undercover detective gets a job as a porter in a disreputable saloon to get information on a stolen painting, which he believes will be fenced there by thieves. He soon falls in love with the saloon owner's daughter, who believes him to be just a porter. Soon his undercover work puts him and the girl in danger, from both the criminals who stole the painting and the infamous Chicago Fire of 1871.

Helen offers herself in marriage to the winner of a poker game in order to obtain money to replace what her brother has stolen. Antonio, a half-breed, is the winner, but Helen is saved from fulfilling her bet by Bruce Devereux when he doubles the stakes and wins the girl. She marries Bruce but leaves for New York when she finds the marriage to be a fake one. There she marries her previous music teacher, but he proves to be faithless, leaving her with a small son. Bruce returns and assures her he had not arranged for a fake marriage. Her present husband, not able to cope with the pressures of his many affairs, kills himself, leaving Helen free to remarry Bruce.

In Mrs. Kemp's house, Barbara encounters Peter Heffner, a wealthy stockbroker, and discovers from him that she has taken up residence in a whorehouse. There is a police raid, but Barbara escapes arrest and returns home. Heffner's son, Neil, goes south to inspect some family property and there meets Barbara, with whom he falls in love. They decide to be married, and she accompanies him to New York, where she meets the elder Heffner for a second time. He denounces her as a whore, but Barbara goes to Mrs. Kemp, who explains the misunderstanding to everyone's satisfaction.

Billy is playing in his backyard with his dog and baby sister, Mary. A ball from the neighboring yard hits him on the head, leading to a fight with the ball's six-year-old owner, Jack. Billy loses the fight and sends his dog to avenge him, which scares Jack. Later on the beach, Jack leaves his four-year-old sweetheart, Olive, to buy ice cream. Billy approaches Olive and she leaves with him, his dog, and baby Mary. When Jack returns, Olive tells him she prefers Billy, making Jack angry and eager to get Billy "in wrong at home". Jack finds an opportunity when baby Mary crawls away near some rocks, and he hides her.

When Colonel Archer, the commanding officer of the military post, refuses to lend money to his second-in-command, Captain Waring, Waring obtains the money from Brent Lindsay, from the nearby mining town, in exchange for his promissory note. As violinist Alfred Wantez embarks on a concert tour leaving his wife Olga and son Billy at home he is attacked by a tramp on his way to the train. The tramp steals his clothes, knocks him unconscious then boards the train. When the train is wrecked the tramp is killed and buried as Wantez. Meanwhile Alfred is found and cared for but has no idea of his identity. Becoming an itinerant musician, he wanders to the seaside where by happenstance Olga and Billy are vacationing. Upon hearing him play “Hearts and Flowers” Olga is drawn to the street where she finds Alfred doesn’t recognize either, she or Billy. She turns to her friend Dr. Allen who performs an operation that restores the violinist’s memory.
