One can determine a line in Tscherkassky’s oeuvre which turns around a game with filmic presentation, with degrees of recognisability — with the only-just and the not-any-more. Just to see desire. An example of this is Erotique. One sees swirling pictures, parts of a woman’s face, red lips, eyes in cyclical fragments of movement. Often it is difficult to tell which part of the body one actually sees (whoever wants to can see/imagine/think sexual organs and sexual acts.) The gaze gets hung up on partial objects, no integral, whole body to think about. No body, whose representation was always one of the problems in cinema.

About Swimming(es)

The first sequence of About Swimming is significant. Immersed in a pool, Dominique, an open water swimmer, performs an automatic routine that is nevertheless executed with care, elegance, and discipline. Her career is on the rise: she just qualified for the Olympic Games. As she prepares to fulfill one of her lifelong and every professional athlete’s dreams, she receives the news that she is pregnant. The present, which was supposed to be prosperous, has become an uncertainty for the swimmer. Only water - whether in the intensity of the sea, a swimming pool or in her bathtub at home - seems to guarantee Dominique a moment of serenity. The strength of the film directed by Manuela Aguilar and Berenice Vigna lies in the affectionate and calm view on the protagonist, who is seen in a limit situation where her family and sense of duty seem to prevail over her own desires.

He's married and has five girls, but he is unhappy because all he wanted was a boy (in spanish argot, "ir por la parejita" means trying to have a couple of children, girl and boy). He only has women and they have only girls. During the film he prays, he tries to have a boy to give him his surname "Fernández". Garisa is one of the best actors of Spanish Comedy, maybe too understimate because the kind of cinema made in Spain during Franco's government.

An atmospheric tribute to the genius of Welsh poet and dramatist Dylan Thomas, using many of the windswept locations where Thomas himself grew up and found his inspiration. The film is hosted/presented by Richard Burton, Thomas's friend, who narrates the story and appears from time to time amidst the Welsh landscape. Burton had already appeared in Douglas Cleverdon's acclaimed BBC radio dramatization of Thomas's 'play for voices' Under Milk Wood in the 1950s and, in the early Seventies, would appear in director Andrew Sinclair's film version as First Voice. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in partnership with The Film Foundation and National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales in 2000.

Drugs, poverty, disease, bigotry and prostitution all figure into this disarmingly candid and often hilarious film, a remarkable work that is the apotheosis of director Spheeris’ early work, and a luminous signpost leading directly to The Decline of Western Civilization (1979-1997). This film examines the reasons why the United States decided to engage in the Korean War. Scenes describe Russia's attempt to gain power following World War II (Korea included), and its refusal to allow free elections in the country. Footage shows Soviet-backed North Korean troops' movement into South Korea on June 25, 1950, the United Nations' response, and the armed struggle against both North Korean and later Chinese troops led by General Douglas MacArthur. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in partnership with Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation in 2005.

Thursday's Children(en)

Won the Academy Award for the Best Documentary Short of 1954. The subject deals with the children at The Royal School for the Deaf in Margate, Kent. The hearing-handicapped children are shown painstakingly learning what words are through exercises and games, practicing lip-reading and finally speech. Richard Burton's calm and sometimes-poetic narration adds to the heartwarming cheerfulness and courage of the children.
