There is great excitement at the Würzburg TV station TV-Frankenwarte: Irmi Werner, the well-known host of the gossip talk show "MainGespräch" disappears after recording a program. Irmi, who is not only popular with the rich and beautiful of the Main-Franconian metropolis, is initially only missed by her son. Soon after, body parts of her turn up scattered all over the city. Chief Inspector Rabe and his colleagues are faced with a mystery, because no body is found - is Irmi still alive in the end and being held mysteriously hostage? But there are also other problems: Rabe's friend Strick has to make sure that his old nanny "Omma Zürrlein" does not lose her apartment. She is being evicted from her apartment by a real estate shark who senses a lot of money in the construction of student apartments. From his room window, he can see the house on the opposite river bank where Zelda lives. She's a really adorable young beauty, but she's less affected than one should think, and so Wander gets his chance. They are having a good time until one day when Wander finds Zelda's father in the school kitchen making love to the kitchen maid. Things turn out bad for most of the characters involved, but there's an open end.

This collage of interviews with the producers, John Hurt, and the makeup man comes off as both interesting and informative. Hurt's recollections about the role and the crazy makeup he worked in, are fascinating, as are the stories about the makeup artist using the real remains of John Merrick archived in the London hospital. A shorter bit has the artist explaining the exact construction of his amibitious makup, and he also narrates a slide show that includes color photos of the finished work. There are some mind-boggling stills of the real Merrick's grotesquely contorted skull, where excess bone seems to have grown like tallow dripping from a horrible candle, or a foaming tumor of excess calcification.

In PATH OF CESSATION the image that is communicated to us by Fulton is a highly mystifying one. Rather than analyze, or enter into a dialogue with the Tibetan culture that he photographs, Fulton has succumbed to it, and through the process has presented us a work of great surface, as well as formal, beauty.

Problem is he isn't nearly as gifted a con-artist as he believes he is and the love of his life doesn't react kindly to his forced reunion.
