The bus is owned by Krstic senior, and driven by his impressionable and dim-witted son Misko.

But the pressure of danger and the intimations of war force them together. The world about them has become so absurd that they seem to each other the only sober people left.

The story of professor Kosta Vujić who in the mid-19th century taught an extraordinarily talented generation of gymnasium students, some of whom would go on to become prominent members of the Serbian society and eventually historically significant figures. He gets involved in this girl's family affairs, rescuing both her and her mother from prostitution and gangsters headed by a man called Bajo, and the new group of people return to the small village in time to celebrate Zivojin's wedding to his neighbor, despite the gangsters' best efforts to stop the celebration, which results in a double wedding.
