Concerts for the People of Kampuchea(en)

Organized by Paul McCartney and the United Nations, these concerts were in response to the 1975-79 Khmer Rouge’s reign, where three million persons perished in Cambodia. During the concerts, McCartney brought three generations of popular musicians together. The older generation included McCartney and the Wings, The Who and members of Procol Harum. The middle generation was represented by Queen and members of Led Zeppelin. Most notably, there was the new generation of mainly New Wavers and Punk Rockers, such as The Pretenders, Elvis Costello and The Attractions, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, The Clash, and The Specials.

I.R.S. Records Presents The Best of The Cutting Edge Volumes I & II(en)

The Cutting Edge first aired in 1983 (a precursor to 120 minutes) on MTV providing viewers with a rare opportunity to intimately voyage the sounds, thoughts, work spaces and living quarters of the most interesting artists on the cutting edge of music. Host Peter Zaremba (of the fabulous Fleshtones) added levity with his wit and love of music and musicians. Artists features in this compilation include R.E.M., Squeeze, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Robyn Hitchcock, Tom Waits, The Blasters, Stan Ridgeway, Husker Du, X, The Alarm, The Fleshtones, Hoodoo Gurus, Jonathan Richman, The Smithereens, The DB's, Let's Active; also bonus appearances by Henry Rollins and Willie Dixon.

Even our faithful crew abandoned us into the stagediving frenzy of the throbbing throng of punters that packed ULU that night. It was a decade when seminal bands like Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Government Issue, Scream, Void, Faith, Rites of Spring, Marginal Man, Fugazi, and others released their own records and booked their own shows-without major record label constraints or mainstream media scrutiny. Contextually, it was a cultural watershed that predated the alternative music explosion of the 1990s (and the industry's subsequent implosion). Thirty years later, DC's original DIY punk spirit serves as a reminder of the hopefulness of youth, the power of community and the strength of conviction.

Even if you don't care for their music (and you're bound to like even a few of their songs), their story is fascinating. It combines 60's protest, youthful braggadocio, and a style of music that would help carry one to the likes of Iggy and the Stooges (not to mention certain aspects of punk rock). This film is clearly a labor of love, combining extraordinarily rare live shows, still shots, a nearly-continuous backdrop of MC5 tunes, penetrating interviews with the remaining members and their spouses, and even FBI surveillance shots. It's the ultimate testimonial to a band that only gains in stature as time goes on.

Wendy O. Williams LIVE: Bump 'N Grind(en)

As the lead singer of the infamous Plasmatics, Wendy O. Williams emerged as one of the most notorious figures on the American punk scene; dubbed the queen of shock rock, her on-stage theatrics were the stuff of underground legend. Often clad in little more than strips of electrical tape covering her nipples, the raspy-voiced Williams earned a cult following for her on-stage antics, which included blowing up cars, sawing guitars in half, and setting equipment on fire. Wendy O Williams name and legacy live on amongst her many fans and Bump n Grind will be a must see for all of them. The DVD features a full live show from her October 1985 UK tour.
