Adapted rather loosely from the works of the E.T.A. Hoffman. Familiar Quays' tropes, much in evidence: automata, trompe l'oeil effects, etc. No credit on the sound design (which is fairly elaborate), tho' that is possibly Larry Sider.

The theatre house of Jan Reeberger is one of the inspected institutions. During the inspection two different world views collide, on the one side, there’s Jan with his idealistic and cosmopolitan worldview, on the other side, there’s Micky who is standing up for the new political system.

Before long, he ends up selling his soul to the devil – the famous “Faustian pact” that has entered everyday language. Dr Faustus gradually realizes his terrible mistake. He apparently repents, but finally dies, the devil coming to collect his soul, and his friends the dismembered body.
