On October 4, 2018, France celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Fifth Republic. It is a republic born in the throes of the Algerian War and one which—from the day it was founded by General de Gaulle until the presidency of a very Jupiterian Emmanuel Macron—has been assailed as a “Republican monarchy” by partisans of a more assertive parliamentarian state. By revisiting the struggle of those who dared oppose the new regime — only to suffer a crushing defeat on September 28, 1958, when they were barely able to garner 20% of the vote against the constitutional text — this film shines a powerful new light on the origins of the Fifth Republic and its consequences for the next 60 years. It is a constitutional debate that planted the seeds for a complete upheaval of the French political landscape, on the left in particular, and set the country in motion toward what would be called the Union of the Left.

Buoyed by the imminent referendum, the group voyage through ephemeral Australian landscape in the microcosm of a minibus, sharing the rich, multilayered stories of their personal histories, as they dream up a hopeful new vision for Australia. As the results of the vote are counted, it’s impact on their future offer two paths – a hopeful breakthrough or another chapter in the long fight for recognition.

Soukeina, 4400 days of night(es)

After the military occupation of Western Sahara in 1976, Moroccan government attacked the civil population with hard repression, forcing hundreds of Saharan people to “disappear” in clandestine jails. An invisible and slow death was the only horizon. However, some prisoners were able to survive after suffering their own “extinction” for more tan 10 years, ripped from their families, suffering torture, in total isolation. When they finally were released, their known world had changed radically.

Sahrawis, between occupation and exile(es)

From a chronological perspective, “Saharauis, entre la ocupación y el exilio” (2010) explains the origins and key points of the Western Sahara conflict, especially since Spain handed over the territory to Morocco and Mauritania. Based on the interviews with the main people affected by the conflict, among others, this documentary shows the Sahrawi fight for survival in a society and a culture that have been able to prevail in occupied territory as well as in the refugee camps of Tindouf (Algeria).

A documentary about the lives of Sahrawi refugees in the Tindouf camps (Algeria). A didactic video for families hosting Sahrawi minors in the Vacations in Peace programme with the objective of them learning and being introduced to the Saharwi culture and customs so that they see what life is like in the camps for these children.

This film offers a picture of the tense situation in which the Sahrawi people have lived for more than 30 years. The yearly celebration of a marathon in the Sahrawi refugee camps serves as the central focus of the story.

Toroboro: La Consulta Popular(es)

In 2007, Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa proposed not to exploit the ITT block in the Yasuní National Park in exchange for $3.6 billion in international compensation. However, rising oil prices led to the reactivation of the project in 2013. The film documents the struggle of the Yasunidos group to call for a referendum to reverse the exploitation. The documentary, through archival material and current recordings, follows the effort and the legal battle against corporate interests throughout three governments, left and right. The documentary is part of a diptych with Toroboro: the name of the plants.

Selma Mohamed Brahim, known as Belgha, lives in the Dajla Saharaui refugee camp in Southern Algeria. He has dedicated his life to preserving the Saharaui culture and identity, because he knows that a nation without culture is a lost nation, and he is making every effort to convey to younger generations all the things they haven't experienced.
