The Best Man of All(cs)

A Czech satirical comedy set around 1900. The inhabitants of the small town of Pětice are excited by a mysterious package that is to be delivered to the best person in the village. Of course, all members of the town council claim the title of best person. In the end, it turns out that it was a cleverly thought-out prank intended to reveal the true character of the "better people" of the town.

A young couple lives in a shared apartment with their grandmother, who constantly interferes in their lives. They can't do anything on their own, they can't even be alone in intimate moments. The son-in-law decides to "get rid" of his grandmother and diligently reads dating ads. Finally, under the pretext of buying a canary, he takes his grandmother to a gamekeeper's lodge, where a lonely gamekeeper lives, longing for company. However, the grandmother sees through the ruse. Will the couple manage to resolve the problem with their grandmother? And how will the grandmother herself react to all of this?

The price will depend on how much water she displaces when immersed in a barrel. And they immediately make the attempt...

The film is based on the feuilleton of the same name by I. Ilf and E. Petrov. A writer named Moldovantsev delivers a thrilling Soviet‐style Robinson Crusoe adventure on deadline, only to have his editor insist on adding a local party chairman, freed ex‐members, an activist collector, a housing committee and even a meeting table, bell and ledger washed ashore. Reluctantly he complies, so far that he jettisons Robinson himself as an unjustified weakling, transforming his novel into an absurd manifesto of bureaucratic excess.
